Statement of Belief

First Church recognizes the bible as the sufficient rule of faith and practice.  All members shall have the undisturbed right to follow the Word of God according to the dictates of their own conscience, under the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit.  We honor the tradition and practices of our Pilgrim forebears as they sought and gained religious freedom for themselves and others.  While granting to all the freedom to interpret the truths of God according as God gives us light, we use the following Statement of Belief, not as a creed, but as an expression of the spirit in which the church interprets the Word of God.

We believe in God, the Father of all, and in Jesus Christ, His son, our Lord and Savior, and in the Holy Spirit, our comforter and guide.  We believe in the bible as the record of God’s revelation.  We believe in the practice of prayer and in eternal life.  We believe in the freedom and responsibility of the individual soul and in the right of private judgment in all matters of conscience.  We believe that the duty of all is to seek the Kingdom of God and his righteousness; to find salvation from a selfish heart and live in loving service to humanity.  We hold it to be the mission of the church to proclaim the gospel to all.  We believe in the worth of worship and in the value of the sacraments.  In this faith we affirm our loyalty to God, and our purposes to do His will.
