Covenant Versus Creed

Congregational churches are a bit unique in the church world.  We are what is called a "covenantal" church instead of a "creedal" church.  This means that, whereas most churches have a specific statement of doctrine that members must adhere to, we don't.  We have a covenant instead.  We covenant (make a promise) with one another to seek God's truth through scripture, acknowledging that what one person understands may differ from another person's interpretation. We simply come to worship together — loving God — not having to believe exactly the same way.  Our church is a congregation of people who are bound together not by what we believe but by the power of a promise.
